Broadcasting Studio Roles: Anchor

Overview & Objectives:

In this lesson, we will learn about the role of the Anchor while learning broadcasting studio roles.

Materials/Resources:

Materials

  • Adobe Premiere
  • GarageBand - use GarageBand to create your own background music and to use its copyright-free sound effects.
  • Digital Images
  • Headphones

Directions:

Anchor -
news presenter – also known as a newsreader, newscaster (short for "news broadcaster"), anchorman or anchorwoman, news anchor or simply an anchor – is a person who presents news during a news program on the television, on the radio or on the Internet.

Reporter -
journalist who investigates, edits and reports news stories for newspapers, radio and television. 

The Anchor's Role in the TEC Studio-

The Anchor(s) will work with the Director, Camera Operators, and Floor Director to create a news program performed in the TEC Studio. The show goes at the Anchors pace.

The following tasks will need to be performed:

  • Establish which anchor is position 1 and 2. (See Diagram)
  • Understand which cameras are 1, 2, and 3.
  • Practice reading the teleprompter. Communicate with the Director/Producer to adjust the script to be more how you say things.
  • Learn Hand Signals to understand communcation from the Floor Director.
  • Communicate with the Sound Board Operator to adjust the speed and readability of the Teleprompter.

Set up:

  • Grab mics, turn them on. Run mics up shirt. Do sound check with the Sound Board Operator. be sure nothing is hitting the mics such as hair.
  • Do shoulder checks to be sure that you have enough light on both sides.
  • Grab Script, read lines during mic checks as well as to prepare for the show until the Floor Director says Standby.
  • Make adjustments to the script so words can be said the way you say them.
  • Unclip microphones, turn off, and return where they are stored.
  • Throw away script.

Directions for turning work in:

Save as period_lastnamei_asssignmentname.mp4 (1a_smithj_lighthouse.mp4) in your 1-6wks folder and upload a copy to Google Classroom.

If you are turning in a file as a group project save as (2a_lastnamei1-lastnamei2-lastnamei3_assignmentname.mp4)
