GarageBand Assignment # 3
Recording and Changing Voices

 
Overview & Objectives:

Description: In this Assignment, you will watch the GarageBand tutorial videos below. Write a script and record yourself with 2 or more different voice effects having a 20 second or more conversation using the vocal transformer to modify one or all the voices. Write yourself a script to go by. Higher points will be awarded for creativeness. For example: add sound effects, interesting dialogue, tell a joke, sing a duet, or tell a story.

Materials/Resources:

Materials

  • GarageBand
  • Microsoft Word - for script
  • Mics are available to record your voices. Ask Mr. Coursey for a mic if you would like to use one.
  • Keyboard (optional)

Vocabulary: GarageBand, Loops, Playhead, Timeline, Vocal Transformer, Loop Browser, Tracks
Directions:

Review the tutorial videos below.

  1. Open Garageband 10. Under New Project > Choose Voice > Click choose button.
  2. Save as 1a_lastnamei_gbvocal in your 1-6wks Folder.
  3. Record your voice onto Garageband. Pretend that you are 2 people talking with each other. (20 seconds or longer)
  4. Use A Vocal Transformer effect on your vocal recording.
    1. Click on the edit tab in the Real Instrument Panel
    2. Click in one of the boxes to add an effect. Choose Vocal Transformer
    3. Change from default, to another setting (chipmunk, droid, etc)
  5. Record yourself with 2 or more different voice effects having a 20 second or more conversation. Write yourself a script to go by. Higher points will be awarded for creativeness. For example: add sound effects, interesting dialogue, tell a joke or story.
  6. Save as 1a_smithj_gbvocal in your 1-6wks folder. Export as a MP3 file. Screen shot your GB timeline, and Upload & Turn a copy of the script, MP3, and Timeline image into Google Classroom.
  7. Check the tips below to get the best grade.

Tips: To save a file in Garageband as a MP3:

  • Choose Share, Export Song to Disk
  • Compress Using MP3 Encoder
  • Click Export

Directions for turning work in:
Save as period_lastnamei_asssignmentname.band (1a_smithj_gbvocal.band)

Save as 1a_lastnamei_gbvocal in your 1-6wks folder. Upload & Turn in the exported MP3 file, script, and screen shot into Google Classroom. You may also turn in the exported MP3 file as well.

Name the files like the following examples: 1a_lastnamei_gbvocal.mp3, 1a_lastnamei_gbvocal-script.docx, & 1a_lastname_gbvocal-timeline.png.

Assignment Checklist:

Be sure that you have completed the following before you turn this project in:

  • Recording must be 20 seconds or longer.
  • Have 2 or more tracks with 1 or more voice effects that make your voice sound like 2 different people recorded in Garageband. Background music or sound effects must be added too.
  • Be sure that the recording sounds like a conversation between 2 different people. You can sing a duet, tell a story, tell a joke, etc.
  • Higher grades will be given for added sound effects and quality of the conversation and creativeness
  • Name your file correctly (1a_lastnamei_gbvocal.band) export as a MP3, and turn the MP3, script, and screen shot of the timeline into Google Classroom.
  • To create a screen shot, choose Shift+command+4 on your keyboard and then select the area of the screen that you want a screen shot of.
