After Effects Face Warp Assignment

 
Overview & Objectives:
In this tutorial from videocopilot.net, you will learn how to add face warp using reverse motion tracking, and Warp face using liquify & texture skin with shadows in Adobe After Effects.
Materials/Resources:

  • Adobe After Effects
  • GarageBand - use GarageBand to create your own background music and to use its copyright-free sound effects.
  • Digital Images
  • FacWarp Files - DemonFaceWarp.zip, Grunge_gray_02.jpg
  • Headphones

In this tutorial from videocopilot.net, you will learn how to add face warp using reverse motion tracking, and Warp face using liquify & texture skin with shadows using Adobe After Effects. You can download the Project files here, but I would like for you to create a project with original video of your own. Use the tutorial video below to help you along.

Shoot footage with actor standing square with the camera

Import the video footage

Drag video into the timeline.

Go to Window>Workspace > Motion Tracking

Or Window >Tracker Controls

With the footage selected in the timeline, click Stabilize Motion (In tracker controls)

Check Position, Check Rotation

Drag Track Point #1 to the Left Eye(outside corner), Drag Track Point #2 to the Right Eye (outside corner). Scale the Track Points out wide and bring the middle back in. Be sure to cover a little of the eyebrow and the corner of each eye.

In Tracker Controls, Click Play in analyze.

Adjust Tracking. Click Apply in the Tracker Controls. Apply to the X & Y, click OK.

(Be sure clip is selected in timeline) Choose Layer > Pre-compose. Click Move all attributes into the New composition. Type PreCompFace in New composition name.

Click OK.

Hold ALT, double Click PreCompFace in the timeline.

4:48 Click Composition > Composition settings.

Change Width to 1700, Height to 956. Click ok (This allows room for the footage to move around)

5:05 Return to the original composition (Timeline: Blank Comp)

5:16 Arrange the PreCompFace composition to be above the Original “blank” Composition so you can see both compositions.

5:23 Click on the top composition, type U to bring up the tracking information.

5:35 Click on the 2nd composition, type P, Shift+R, Shift+A to bring up the Anchor Point, Position, and Rotation.

5:45 Use the information from the original track data to reverse what it has done to the footage.

5:56 Alt+Click on Position(in the second composition) Pick-whip the anchor Point  of the tracked footage to the stabilized footage. (When you alt-click, Alt+click on the stopwatch for position)

6:33 Alt+Click on the Rotation stop watch (in the second composition).  Pick-whip the rotation. 6:39 add expression to the end (*-1) to reverse it.

7:10 Click on Anchor Point (in the second composition), Pick-whip the anchor point to the position (in the PreCompFace composition)

7:43 Sunglasses. Bring the sunglasses into the original blank composition. Parent the Sunglasses to the footage.

8:05 Add the Liquify filter, Click Effect>Distort>Liquify

8:32 Click on the Pucker Tool, Under Pucker Tool Option, increase the brush size (74) and the Brush Pressure (71)

8:54 Hold down the mouse on the nose to shrink the nose down.

10:25 Click Reset. Look at some of the tools

10:29 Click on the Smudge Tool, Adjust the Brush Size (40) and Brush Pressure (88)

11:13 Hold Control to scale down the brush size. Bring the brush pressure up to 78. Drag the eyebrows up to give an evil look. Click Control to increase the brush size.

Click on the middle of his eyes and drag down.

11:39 Click on the Bloat Tool, click on the nose to enlarge it. Click on the Smudge Tool to move the nose up. 11:54 Stretch out the nostrils.

12:07 Click on the Magic Eraser to erase the distortion.

12:14 You can also view the distortion in by checking View Mesh(under view options)

12:22 Back to the Smudge tool. Distort the nose, enlarge the mouth.

12:39 To Keyframe the effect on and off. Adjust the playhead just before he turns into the demon.

12:58 Under Distortion Percentage, click on the Stopwatch, turn it to 0%. Move forward a few frames and turn the Distortion Percentage to 100%.

13:05 Type U

13:15 Stop the Playhead towards the end. Under Liquify, set another keyframe, move forward and create another Keyframe, set Distortion Percentage to 0% to turn it off.

Colorize the distortion

14:00 Create a new Adjustment Layer (Layer>New >Adjustment Layer)

Move to the middle of the animation where the distortion takes place on the timeline.

While in the Adjustment Layer, draw a mask with the pen tool around his face.

14:20 Type M, M to look at the Mask Properties.

Change the Mask Feather to 10.

14:27 Choose Effect>Color Correction>Hue/Saturation, The Effect>Color Correction> Curves

In the Effect Controls Panel, Bring the Master Saturation down to -69.

14:40 Add some contrast to the curves. Go to the Red Channel, bring the curve down to add a little green. Go to the Blue Channel, adjust as needed.

15:17 In the Adjustment Layer, change Mask Expansion to 5 pixels.

15:24 Parent the Mask to the PreCompFace to lock the Adjustment layer to the footage.

Animate the Adjustment Layer to fade out.

15:50 Alt Click on Opacity in the Adjustment Layer, pick-whip to the distortion percentage in Liquify(PreCompFace). Then it will fade on as it distorts in.

16:17 In the Adjustment Layer, hit M to keyframe the mask shape.

Move the points around the face, move forward a bit. Then move the points again.

17:00 Add shadows to the face to make it look more evil

Choose Layer>New Adjustment Layer to add a second adjustment layer.

Choose Effect>Color Correction>Curves

Adjust the curve down, to bring the darkness down.

17:25 Use the Pen Tool to draw masks around the eyes(to create shadows). Use the Pen tool to draw a shadow around the mouth.

17:52 To feather the masks, select the Adjustment Layer, Hit F. Hold down shift and select Mask 1, 2, & 3. Change their values to 20 pixels.

18:10 Parent the Adjustment Layer to the PreCompFace

18:16 Hit T (Adjustment Layer), and U for PreCompface Layer.

Alt Click on Opacity in the Adjustment Layer and Link it to the Liquify Filter(In PreCompFace) This allows everything to fade in at the same time.

18:32 Add expression at the end /2

19:10 The other think you can do is add a crazy texture to his face.

In Riot Gear FX folder, go to Grungy_Textures folder>Low>Greyscale, choose Grunge_gray_02.jpg.

19:50 drag Grunge_gray_02.jpg to the composition. Hit T to bring the Opacity. Lower Opacity to 55%.

Pres F4, change the Mode to Overlay. Move the texture around over the face.

20:15 Use the Pen Tool to draw around the face.  Then add more masks around the eyes, nose, and mouth.

20:54 Hit M, M to bring up all the Masks you just created.

21:00 Reverse the second two Masks (Change the Mode to Subtract) Increase the Mask 2 & 3 feather to 20.

Change the Opacity to 50% in Grunge_gray_02.jpg

21:27 Link Grunge_gray_02.jpg parent to PreCompFace.

12:35 Link (Pick-whip) the Grunge_gray_02.jpg Opacity to the PreCompFace Liquify Layer.

21:40 add an express, /2 to Opacity.

21:55 Add a final Color Correction. Layer>New >Adjustment Layer.

Effect>Color Correction> Curves

22:05 Darken the image by lowering the curve

22:07 In the Effects and Presets Panel, Add FMP_GreenEasy from (Film Magic Pro/Cinema_Styles)

Be sure to create enough Animation to last 5 seconds or more. When you are done, add your completed Face Warp Video to the Render Que.
File > Export > add to Render Que.
In the Render Que, click output to, choose your preferred location to render to and rendered file name to save as. 1a_lastnamei_facewarp.mov

Directions for turning work in:

Save as period_lastnamei_asssignmentname.mp4 (1a_smithj_facewarp.mov) in your 1-6wks folder and upload a copy in the Google Classroom.

Extra Tips:

Grading Criteria:

  • Video must be 5 or more seconds
  • Use original video that you have shot. You can record yourself using a video camera, Photobooth, or your phone. Just make sure you are able to import your video into Adobe After Effects. If the person in the video is not a student in this class, I may ask to see your original AE file to varify that this is your own work.
  • You will be graded on the following criteria from the tutorial: Motion Tracking, masking, Liquify Filter, pucker tool, bloat tool, smudge tool, keyframing/timing, colorizing the distortion, shadows, texture, and creativeness.
  • Higher grades will be given to those that follow the tutorial closely, add additional story, sound, dialogue, music, or effects.
